Hit, Miss or Maybe: Chatroulette

In many ways I am too late to the party and this has already gone mainstream with features in the media as well as an odd marketing campaigns from French Connection. However I think Chatroulettte could mature in 2011 from being a service that is the preserve of exhibitionists through to one that enables people to make real connections. In case you missed the hype Chatroulette is little like video Skype but with a genius twist. You switch your webcam on and start having a video conversation. What makes it interesting is that the person you speak to is chosen at random!

What has made Chatroulette notorious is that some users say that as many as one in ten of the people they encounter are naked men. Ever the optimist I believe that people will get bored with this, or maybe even Chatroulette’s developers will work out a way of weeding nakedness out. Then it is very likely that people will find real uses for the services. Think speed dating. Or even niches. You might be want to speak to a group of Newcastle United fans after a game and if I specify that request I could be chatting to Mikhail from Moscow about the Russian Geordies appreciation society. Think too how it might work if it were incorporated into a TV and you could talk with randoms about live events.

1 in 10 Chatroulette discussions involve a naked man! Enough said?

My Comments:

The site needs a visual overhaul but the concept is interesting and one that in time may deliver significant sensible (and entertaining) real tangible (non naked!) opportunities.

Ive never laughed so much at the potential concept, considering the fun you could have and probably not been as disappointed in quite a while in what was actually delivered and what actually happened. However, if it makes you take a look and perhaps even have the quickest of tries – its all been worth the effort. You have to give it a go – just in case!!!!

Much like attending an Aberdeen FC cup match, the build up was greater than the actual event. Hey ho.

Fun/stupid – all because of the potential for a naked exhibitionist but beyond that pretty pointless unless the developers identify the real application and the opportunity for the technology.

Fun – but sadly overall…a MISS!
