Rory McIlroy vs Caro Wozniaki

Twitter Showdown: Rory McIlroy Vs Caroline Wozniaki

They’re young, attractive and at the top of their respective games. Rory McIlroy and Carolina Wozniaki have been together for several months. Their romance began on Twitter so it’s probably a good time to see how this power couple stacks up on the social network now.

Tiger Woods Economy

The Tiger Woods Economy infographic depicts the sponsorships and financial impact of Tiger Woods on golf such as tournament viewing figures and ticket sales.

Admittedly this was a few years ago but I am awaiting the updated review of the same information.

Invention: The Sand Wedge

Gene Sarazen’s invention of the modern sand wedge is a series of well-worn tales that bears repeating.

1. While being taught by Howard Hughes how to fly a plane, Sarazen took note of how a plane’s tail adjusted downward during takeoff, spawning an idea.

2. The inspiration for the design itself came from Sarazen’s careful observation of ducks landing on water (naturally), particularly the way in which their bellies skimmed across the water.

Either way, and whatever tale you prefer, Sarazen reached out to his equipment company, Wilson, and had them send him half-a-dozen niblicks (the equivalent of a 9-iron).

Using solder, Sarazen experimented with different amounts of mass on the sole of the clubs until he found one he felt would easily extricate the ball from sand.

Sarazen took the club to the 1932 British Open, taking care to keep the club under wraps for fear it would be deemed illegal before play began. Sarazen then used the club during his win at Prince’s in 1932.

Race to Dubai: Irish Open confirmed at Portrush

Author: Belfast Telegraph

The Irish Open is on its way to Royal Portrush Golf Club this summer.

The European Golf tour is expected to make an announcement at the club tomorrow (Friday 6th January) confirming the tournament will return to Porturush for the first time since 1947.

Buoyed by the recent Major successes of Darren Clarke and Graeme McDowell — who honed their games at Portrush — and Rory McIlroy, the Stormont Executive pledged last July to provide “substantial financial backing” to bring a European Tour event to Royal Portrush.

It is hoped that a successful staging of the tournament will quell concerns about the viability of holding the Open Championship at the course in the future.

It has been 60 years since the one and only occasion when the Open was held in Northern Ireland — with Max Faulkner winning here in 1951.

And last year’s Open champion Clarke is among those who believe it is time to bring the world’s oldest major championship back to the north coast.

The 42-year-old said: “The golf course is every bit as good as any of the Open venues.

“It’s good enough to be in the rota.”

Speaking last summer, Tourism Minister Arlene Foster called on all of the parties involved to make sure the Irish Open is a success in Northern Ireland.

“This will need a major commitment from Royal Portrush Golf Club, the European Tour, sponsors, the Northern Ireland Tourist Board, Tourism Ireland, Coleraine Borough Council and others,” she said.

“But I am confident that we will work well together to make this a world-class event.”

She added: “This will showcase our golf tourism offering all over the world and provide a major boost to our local economy.”
